Aizawl: The southwest monsoon officially reached parts of Manipur and Mizoram on Saturday, providing a reprieve from summer temperatures and initiating the rainy season across Northeast India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that weather conditions remain favorable for the system to cover the rest of the region within the next two to three days.
This arrival aligns closely with the normal schedule for the first time in five years. Beyond the Northeast, the monsoon has progressed into sections of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the Bay of Bengal, as well as most of Tamil Nadu.
The IMD expects fairly widespread rainfall across the northeastern states through June 12. While general rain is forecast, the department also issued warnings for localized severe weather. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely in Arunachal Pradesh from June 9 to 12, and in Assam and Meghalaya between June 9 and 11. The agency noted that "weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance" over the remaining parts of the region.
Residents in Assam and Meghalaya should prepare for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph. Similar conditions are expected across Arunachal Pradesh and surrounding areas throughout the week.
