Shillong: South West Garo Hills officials are forming Block Level Task Forces to curb a rising tide of suicides. The district recorded 18 deaths, involving 15 men and three women. Local authorities announced the new units on Thursday to observe World Suicide Prevention Day.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma attended the launch at Garobadha Government Higher Secondary School. He labeled the loss of life a major problem for the region. "The figures are a matter of serious concern," Varma stated while addressing the crowd. The district faces unique challenges due to its small population and geography.
Raymond ZD Shira, an Additional Deputy Commissioner, tasked teachers with monitoring student behavior for red flags. He pushed for teamwork between police, schools, health workers, and families to save lives. Psychiatrist Dr. Steve Cherak R. Marak and Dr. Matgrik LK Sangma also demanded better public access to mental health support.
Programs spanned the entire state. In Ri-Bhoi, experts at the NEIGRIHMS Rural Health and Training Centre taught visitors to spot verbal and behavioral warnings. Staff also promoted the Tele-MANAS helpline to bridge the gap in crisis care.
East Jaintia Hills officials held their own event at Rymbai Government Higher Secondary School. District Malaria Officer Dr. CS Bareh joined legal aid counsel K. Challam to lead students in a pledge against mental health stigma. The day wrapped up with drawing contests and public discussions focused on early intervention.
