Imphal: Social worker Shanjoy Ahanthem wants the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly to act fast. He pushed for resolutions on the National Register of Citizens and a tough anti-terrorism law. The upcoming Monsoon Session might be the final sitting for this group. Ahanthem warned that the House needs to act now to protect the state's future.
He argued that the nationwide Census must wait. The Union Government needs to finish the NRC update first through a Gazette notification. He believes holding the Census without the NRC hurts the political, economic, and cultural rights of indigenous communities. The stakes are high.
Ahanthem pointed at the tripartite Suspension of Operations agreement. He claimed Kuki armed groups under this pact carry out killings and narco-terrorism. He wants a specific Manipur Anti-Terrorism Law with Special Courts for fast trials. He cited the effectiveness of similar laws in Gujarat and Maharashtra. He told the BJP-led government to move past its Act East Policy and prioritize local security.
Illegal immigration remains a major worry. He urged the State Government to enforce the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 to track and deport migrants. He also appealed to the Union Government to identify and remove illegal immigrants from all northeastern states. He stated, "The BJP-led government should move beyond the Act East Policy and take stronger measures to safeguard the state's security."
