Sivasagar Citizens Protest ONGC Policies Amid Threats of Mass Agitation

Guwahati: Residents and activists gathered at Yuva Dal in Sivasagar on June 7 to protest the policies of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. Organized by the All Tai Ahom Students Union, the assembly addressed widespread frustration over declining local recruitment, the outsourcing of oilfield operations to private firms, and the relocation of administrative offices away from the district.

Participants argued that these changes harm the regional economy and disregard the needs of Assam. The assembly finalized a list of demands for the state-run energy company, including full local employment quotas, better hospital infrastructure in Sivasagar and Charaideo, and increased investment in local environmental and cultural projects.

Several local leaders and experts attended the meeting to advocate for the community. During the event, speakers highlighted the necessity for the energy sector to align its operations with the welfare of indigenous populations. ATASU leaders issued a stern warning to the corporation regarding the future of these policies. They stated, "If the concerns raised by the people remain unaddressed, the organization would soon launch a large-scale democratic movement against ONGC's alleged anti-local policies."

The group emphasized that they intend to maintain public pressure until the company guarantees that local interests are fully protected. The assembly concluded with a call for immediate corrective action to avoid further unrest in the region.
