Guwahati: A 45-year-old man died Monday while trying to save a 14-year-old girl from an oncoming train in Batua village. The girl attempted to cross the tracks as the up-bound Sifung Express approached the Bajali district site. Alal Ali ran to help her. Both victims died at the scene after the speeding train hit them.
The incident shocked local residents. Police and railway officials arrived quickly to start their investigation. This was a tragedy. Locals claimed this area has a history of fatal accidents involving pedestrians using unofficial shortcuts across the tracks.
Residents pointed to another death just a few days ago near Pathsala. They demanded that railway authorities install iron fencing to stop trespassing and force people toward designated crossings. One resident stated, "Such measures could help prevent similar accidents in the future."
