Shillong Ropeway Project Faces Final One-Year Countdown

Shillong: The Rs 151-crore Shillong ropeway project has finally hit the home stretch. After years of legal fights and stalled permits, crews have one year to finish the job. The line will connect Lawsohtun to the state's highest peak by late 2025. It aims to cut down the brutal gridlock on roads heading toward Upper Shillong.

South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai inspected the site Saturday. He checked the progress alongside the agency running the build. Officials confirmed the project is now a priority for the Khasi Hills region. This route serves as a new way to move tourists toward the popular landmark.

The project survived intense scrutiny from the High Court. Environmentalists raised alarms about the loss of trees across the range. To fix this, the builders must follow a strict replanting rule. "10 trees are to be planted for every one felled," officials stated during the review of the environmental mitigation plan. This reforestation effort was a mandatory condition to get the green light for construction.
