Shillong: Investigators remain empty-handed. No suspects are in custody following the twin petrol bomb strikes against the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board office in Shillong. The attack occurred at noon on August 3 while staff worked inside the building.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the case is still open. Police are currently working to identify the culprits. They remain tight-lipped on progress.
The arson came exactly three days after a heated July 31 public hearing regarding a limestone mining project proposed by Shree Cement Ltd at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills. Officials rescheduled that session after a previous attempt failed over law and order chaos. Opponents, including local farmers and various groups, claimed authorities blocked them from the venue while letting project supporters inside. The company now faces stiff resistance from residents worried about their livelihoods and the environment. Despite the timing, MSPCB officials said it was premature to link the attack to the hearing.
