Shillong Lok Sabha By-election Faces Delay Until October

Shillong: The Shillong Lok Sabha seat is expected to remain vacant until at least October. The Election Commission appears prepared to bypass the standard six-month mandate for filling vacancies to prioritize an intensive cleaning of the state electoral rolls.

Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari indicated that the Special Intensive Revision of these rolls is scheduled to continue through October. While Section 149 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, typically requires by-elections to occur within six months of a vacancy, the ongoing administrative revision process has forced a shift in the timeline. The seat became vacant this February following the death of MP Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon, meaning the contest was originally expected by August.

Tiwari emphasized that the exercise is vital to ensure accuracy. He stated, "The exercise involves verifying voter details and removing ineligible entries across the state."

This delay leaves the Khasi-Jaintia Hills without parliamentary representation for eight months. The gap comes at a sensitive time as the state continues to lobby New Delhi regarding the Inner Line Permit, the inclusion of the Khasi language in the 8th Schedule, and ongoing border disputes. Local political parties are preparing for a significant contest, with the Voice of the People Party aiming to retain the seat while the NPP and UDP seek to rebound from recent general election losses.
