Guwahati: Congress reorganized its top brass on September 5. The party shook up leadership roles to prepare for upcoming state elections. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal announced the changes take effect immediately.
Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel now oversees Assam. He replaces the outgoing official. Sachin Pilot takes charge of Punjab as the state approaches elections early next year. Randeep Singh Surjewala adds Gujarat to his duties while keeping his current post in Karnataka.
Other key assignments include Sukhdeo Bhagat in Chhattisgarh, Dr Sirivella Prasad in Maharashtra, and P V Mohan in Andhra Pradesh. Mukul Wasnik stays on as an AICC general secretary. The party officially thanked outgoing leaders Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala, and Manickam Tagore for their service.
Venugopal confirmed the new appointments follow a direct order from the Congress president. "The Congress president had reassigned and appointed party functionaries as general secretaries and in-charges of various states with immediate effect," he said. Gujarat will face its own electoral test later in 2027.
