Shillong: Shillong residents are banding together to help flood victims in Assam. Thousands of families lost their homes as the disaster deepens. The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students’ Association (SSASA) launched a relief drive to gather supplies for the survivors.
Volunteers need clean clothes, dry food, water, mosquito repellents, sanitary pads, baby food, diapers, blankets, and towels. They also need toiletries, disinfectants, medicine, first-aid, candles, matches, flashlights, and batteries. SSASA president Kaushik Das stated, “This is not the first time we have undertaken such an initiative.”
The association formed in 1977. It acts as the lead group for Assamese students studying in Shillong. They have a history of helping during regional disasters. Volunteers are currently collecting items across the city. They plan to ship the goods to Upper Assam this Thursday.
Collection points are open at NEHU Campus, Laban, Bishnupur, Laitumkhrah, Motinagar, Nongrim Hills, Rynjah, and Dhankheti. People from many different backgrounds are donating cash and goods. Das noted that every contribution helps families who lost everything. The group remains focused on getting these supplies into the hands of those in the hardest hit districts.
