Shillong Expands Ka Bos Jong Ngi Bus Service

Shillong: The state government will launch 15 additional buses for the Ka Bos Jong Ngi transit service starting July 3. The expansion pushes the fleet beyond its current path between New Shillong Township and Upper Shillong. More city routes will finally get coverage.

Officials want to avoid the messy fate of the old JNNURM bus program. Those vehicles hit the scrap heap after minimal use because nobody kept them running. Most of the fleet ended up condemned in bus yards.

Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar expects better results this time. He ordered operators to keep the new fleet in top shape. He told reporters that "bus operators have been instructed to strictly maintain the newly launched buses so that they do not become unusable after merely one or two years."

The government held a meeting last year to set these standards. They refuse to let these buses rot away like their predecessors.
