Shillong: Shillong author Salil Gewali picked up the Global Wisdom Excellence Award. A Virginia-based group, Reform Education for a New World, handed him the prize during International Yoga Day. The honor recognizes his book, Great Minds on India, which highlights Indian heritage.
A NASA chief scientist wrote the book's foreword. It now exists in 16 languages. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma released the German version back in 2022. For the last eight years, the Virginia group has shipped these books to schools across the United States.
Dr. Usha Chaudhary, who once served as a Senior Vice President at The Washington Post, said the book bridges the gap between Indian philosophy and modern science. The group’s chairman, Dr. Dhananjaya Kumar, praised the work for steering people away from mere material gain. "I have personally gifted this book to hundreds of students and teachers in both India and the USA," he said.
A new Sanskrit version is currently in the works. Translators Usha Jaya Raman and Dr. Annapurna Nori handled the project under the watchful eye of Sanskrit scholar Dr. Baldevananda Sagar. Samskrita Bharati will publish this edition in Ontario, Canada. Gewali missed the Virginia ceremony because of personal commitments.
