Shillong Announces Traffic Diversions and Drone Ban for NEC Plenary

Shillong: Shillong Traffic Police have announced citywide traffic diversions and no-entry zones to accommodate the North Eastern Council (NEC) Plenary Meeting at the State Convention Centre. These restrictions begin at 7 am on Thursday and will remain in effect until officially withdrawn.

Drivers at Gurudwara and YWCA junctions will see vehicles from Lower Lachumiere and St. Anthony’s College diverted toward AIR Junction. Meanwhile, traffic from the Civil Secretariat will be redirected at Pinewood and Matri Mandir junctions. Additional restrictions take effect at 8.30 am at 4th Furlong Point and B.K. Bajoria Junction, where vehicles from Polo and NEEPCO will be routed to alternative paths. Furthermore, Jail Road from the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School to the petrol pump will stay closed until noon.

East Khasi Hills District Magistrate Abhilash Baranwal has declared a no-drone zone within a three-kilometer radius of the State Convention Centre from June 3 to June 5. This measure, implemented under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, prohibits all drone and UAV activity to protect attending VVIPs.

The city is currently finalizing preparations for the arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and various northeastern chief ministers. Local crews have been busy patching potholes and refreshing lane markings along VIP routes. This sudden maintenance push has prompted questions from residents regarding why such upkeep is typically prioritized only ahead of high-profile visits.
