Guwahati: A severe storm swept through the Dhubri district of Assam on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant destruction to the historic Dhorarghat Bottala Dham. The gale-force winds hit the Dhorarghat Battala village around 1:30 p.m., uprooting a banyan tree estimated to be over 500 years old.
The massive tree fell directly onto the temple premises, causing extensive structural damage. The Namghar, a traditional Vaishnavite prayer hall, suffered a collapsed roof and framework. The neighboring Nat-Mandir dance hall also sustained heavy damage, with pillars broken and sections of the roof destroyed by the falling debris.
Although the damage to the cultural site is severe, no injuries were reported. The temple was mostly empty at the time of the storm, which helped prevent a potential tragedy. Local residents and temple committee members have since begun clearing debris and securing the site.
The community is now calling on the state government and district administration to provide financial and technical aid for restoration efforts. Residents also hope authorities will assist in preserving the surviving sections of the ancient tree, which remains a vital symbol of the region's spiritual heritage.
