Search continues for remaining victims at Sikkim hydropower tunnel

Gangtok: Rescue teams have recovered 22 bodies from the under-construction Head Race Tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project in South Sikkim. Operations restarted early on July 22 after high water levels and heavy mud forced a temporary suspension on Tuesday. Crews are fighting to reach the remaining missing personnel.

Multiple agencies are working in the tunnel. The National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Patel Engineering Limited, and Mines Rescue teams from Eastern Coalfields and Western Coalfields are on site. A second unit from the Asansol-based Eastern Coalfields arrived at 10 pm to bolster the search. Recovery efforts continued through the night.

NHPC officials are stationed at the project to monitor the situation. They confirmed the company will provide an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. "NHPC expresses its profound grief over the tragic loss of lives and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of grief," the agency stated.

Conditions remain hazardous. Teams are using high-capacity pumps to drain water and mud from the site. Ambulances and medical personnel stand ready for emergencies. Workers requiring specialized care will be sent to Rangpo Hospital. Authorities promise to keep digging until every victim is found.
