Methane Explosion Traps 25 Workers in Sikkim Tunnel Collapse

Gangtok: A violent methane explosion ripped through the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI hydropower project in Sikkim at midday. The blast triggered a massive landslide. It trapped at least 25 workers nearly 1.5 kilometres deep inside the under-construction tunnel. While some staff escaped the collapse on their own, a worker from Jholungay in the Samardung area of South Sikkim remains among those stranded.

Initial rescue efforts crumbled. Rangpo Fire and Emergency Services personnel pushed inside but retreated after encountering toxic fumes and lethal oxygen levels. Several rescuers fell ill during the attempt. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force also failed to reach the site. High gas concentrations and unstable debris blocked their path.

Namchi Deputy Commissioner Anupa Tamling confirmed the rising casualty estimate. "The figure has been revised based on preliminary verification. The number may still change as authorities continue cross-checking details with company officials and verifying the attendance records of workers present at the site," Tamling said. Officials are now working to restore ventilation and stabilize the structure. No one has been pulled from the tunnel yet. Disaster response agencies, police, and company officials remain on high alert as the dangerous operation drags on.
