Rescue Crews Pull 22 Bodies From Sikkim Tunnel Collapse

Gangtok: Rescue teams have recovered 22 bodies from the under-construction Head Race Tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project in South Sikkim. Operations restarted on July 22 after high water levels and mud forced a temporary halt. Crews are now using high-capacity pumps to drain the tunnel.

Search efforts remain difficult. The tunnel is cramped and dangerous. A second rescue team from Eastern Coalfields Limited in Asansol arrived at 10 pm to reinforce the mission. They joined NDRF units, the SDRF, Patel Engineering Limited, and Western Coalfields Limited. These agencies are working around the clock to clear the debris.

NHPC management is on-site to oversee the recovery. They promised an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. "NHPC expresses its profound grief over the tragic loss of lives and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of grief," the company stated.

Medical teams and ambulances stand ready at the site. Workers needing specialized care will go to Rangpo Hospital. Authorities confirmed the search will not stop until every missing person is found. The Sikkim government and district officials continue to monitor the progress and provide logistical support to the exhausted crews.
