SAPAL Claims Land Rights Amid Tensions in Langathel Hill Areas

Imphal: The Salaicha Pibarel Apunba Lup (SAPAL) has formally rejected claims by outside groups regarding the Pibakonjin and Khenam hill areas. Convenor Hemajit stated that the land historically belongs to Langathel village, serving as a site for traditional rituals, cultivation, and conservation efforts for generations. The organization cites a 1932 Manipur State Darbar notification, which recorded the territory as part of the Valley Village Reserve Forest.

SAPAL also voiced strong opposition to attempts to rename the hills as Lamyeng Thing, dismissing recent assertions made by residents of Lamlong Khullen village. The organization stated that it remains committed to protecting the area from unauthorized claims and interference.

The dispute intensified on June 13 when SAPAL alleged that a volunteer, P. Ranachandra, was assaulted and threatened by individuals from Lamlong Khullen. According to the organization, the volunteer was inspecting reports of plantation damage when the confrontation occurred. SAPAL clarified that the individual was strictly there to verify facts and was not involved in any unauthorized cultivation.

In response to the incident, the organization issued a firm warning against further intimidation. Hemajit stated, "Urged all concerned to refrain from intimidation and interference in plantation and conservation activities being undertaken by Langathel villagers." SAPAL is now calling for restraint from all parties to avoid further escalation of tensions in the region.
