Imphal: A violent standoff erupted in Manipur on Sunday evening. Suspected cadres from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah and the Zeliangrong United Front engaged in a gunfight at Gaidimjang Part 2, known locally as Samlengtiang. The shooting began at 6:10 pm. It lasted for 30 minutes.
Bullets flew near the Khoupum police station jurisdiction, forcing farmers and travelers to shelter in place. Darkness and rugged, hilly terrain prevented security reinforcements from reaching the scene promptly. No casualties or injuries were reported once the firing ceased at 6:40 pm.
The Rongmei Luh Phuam, a local women’s organization, pointed the finger at the NSCN-IM. They alleged that the group arrived by vehicle, exited near Irang Bridge, and marched into territory controlled by the ZUF. The RLP issued a firm plea to both factions, stating, "Urged both groups to stop hostilities and resolve differences through dialogue."
The Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi, echoed these concerns regarding the cycle of violence. They cautioned local civil society groups against taking sides, warning that biased condemnation only deepens communal rifts. These organizations continue to press for an immediate end to armed confrontations near villages and agricultural lands.
