Shillong: Relentless rain crippled Meghalaya on Sunday. Mawsynram took the hardest hit. The weather department recorded 530 mm of rain there in just 24 hours. That total matches what dry towns like Jodhpur usually see in six months.
The deluge carved through the landscape and destroyed a section of the national highway. A vital stretch near Laitlyngkot town crumbled and washed away. This break killed the primary road link between Shillong and the Bangladesh border town of Dawki. Traffic is currently stalled.
"The incessant rain caused significant damage to infrastructure, washing away a stretch of the national highway connecting Shillong with Dawki near the Bangladesh border," officials reported. Other areas suffered, too. RKM Sohra logged 470 mm, while Mawkyrwat faced 390 mm of rainfall.
District authorities confirmed no one got hurt in the collapse. Crews from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd are now on site. They are working alongside contractors to fix the road and restore travel. Monsoon rains also hammered Shella, Williamnagar, and Jowai as the storm pushed across the state.
