Rights Group Joins Siang Valley Opposition Against Mega Dams

Itanagar: The Human Rights of Arunachal (HRA) has thrown its weight behind the Adi community in their fight against mega hydropower dams in the Siang region. The group is now calling on the Arunachal Pradesh government to scrap the massive infrastructure plans entirely. Nongku Pertin, the HRA Vice President for the East Zone, formally requested that Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who handles the Power portfolio, rethink the proposal to safeguard both local residents and communities living downstream in Assam.

HRA denies being against progress. They argue that development must remain sustainable and environmentally sound. Instead of massive dams, the group suggests building smaller projects ranging from 100 MW to 500 MW where the terrain allows. They warned that some officials are too focused on immediate land compensation payouts rather than the lasting welfare of the public. "Public representatives should always prioritise the well-being, safety and future of the people of Arunachal Pradesh," the organization stated.

The group demands deep environmental, geological, and social impact assessments before any work begins. They want transparent scientific studies and genuine public meetings to address the risks. There is significant fear that projects in the Siang belt could threaten Pasighat and nearby Assam. The HRA insists the government must "think twice" before proceeding. They maintain that the long-term rights of the people must always trump political or economic gain.
