Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh faces a deepening divide over the proposed 11,200-megawatt Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. The massive dam aims to boost energy security and bring roads to isolated regions. Many residents crave the promised jobs and social services. Others fear the loss of their land and local heritage.

The project currently sits in the Pre-Feasibility Report stage. The state government claims this assessment is not a final green light. Protesters disagree. They want all survey work stopped and security forces pulled from the area. Tensions are high. Activist Bhanu Tatak points to police filings against demonstrators as evidence of a failing relationship with the state. She stated, "It is hard to trust the state government now due to its lack of sensibility."

Local voices remain split. Oyin, a resident of Boleng town, sees the project as a lifeline for youth needing work and better connections. M Tame, from Parong village, argues that progress does not have to destroy their identity. He insists that schools and clinics could accompany the construction if officials plan correctly.

State leaders continue to push for local buy-in. Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu labels the project a boon for the belt. Ojing Tasing, the Minister of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, called for transparency during a review meeting in Yingkiong last month. Residents are still waiting for clear facts on land seizure and long-term environmental consequences. Community member Aluk summarized the frustration: "The important thing is that development should happen with people, not simply around them."
