Aizawl: V Thangzama, a celebrated Mizo lyricist and distinguished former civil servant, passed away at the age of 91 in Aizawl. His family confirmed that he died at Aizawl Hospital on the night of Thursday, May 14, following a lifetime of significant contributions to public service and Mizo cultural heritage.
A native of Ngopa in the Saitual district, Thangzama left behind a prolific body of work, having composed 44 original songs and translated 17 others. In recognition of his enduring influence on music and literature, he was honored with the Mizo Academy Award in 2013.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, he was a trailblazer in public administration, serving as one of the first individuals from Mizoram to join the Assam Civil Service before transitioning to the Mizoram Civil Service. He concluded his career with his retirement in January 1994.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging Thangzama as a vital figure whose work bolstered Mizo identity, patriotism, and social unity. The Chief Minister noted that his songs served as a pillar for the Young Mizo Association and continued to inspire generations with messages of faith and togetherness. Following a funeral service, Thangzama was laid to rest in Aizawl at Dawrpui Vengthar on Friday.
