Imphal: Chongtham Vikram Singh, 54, died after a violent clash near his Kilokari village home in southeast Delhi. The retired guitarist and Western music pioneer confronted a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff who were creating a disturbance outside his residence on September 7. He walked downstairs to object to the noise. The group responded with a barrage of fists and blows.
His son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital. Vikram did not survive his injuries. Sunlight Colony Police Station received a call about the beating at the time, logging it as GD No. 10A.
Officers have detained several suspects, including one minor. Investigators are still piecing together exactly how the fight unfolded. While members of the Northeast community suggest racial targeting played a role, the police have not confirmed that motive. "Necessary legal action is being taken as per law. Further facts will be established during investigation," the Delhi Police said.
The North East Students' Society, Delhi University, demanded a fast and fair inquiry. Protesters have gathered at the local police station to ensure the perpetrators face justice. Vikram was a veteran of the Manipur music scene, having performed with bands like Ultra Vires, Phoenix, and Eastern Dark. He was the eldest son of famed singer Chongtham Kamala.
