Guwahati: A rare yellow-throated marten has been recorded in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. Officials describe the sighting as a significant addition to the wildlife inventory of the UNESCO World Heritage site and a testament to the health of the local ecosystem.
The Chief Minister's Office highlighted the discovery as evidence of the resilience of Assam's conservation model. While the park is world-renowned for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses, this development shows that habitat protection measures are successfully supporting a diverse range of species, including tigers, elephants, leopards, and various birds.
Wildlife experts noted that the presence of the carnivorous, agile marten indicates that the park provides a suitable and thriving environment for complex animal populations. This finding reinforces the park's status as a premier biodiversity hotspot in India.
Beyond its ecological importance, Kaziranga continues to see a surge in public interest. Recent government data indicates that tourist numbers grew by more than 15 percent during the 2025-26 period, with total visitors reaching 4.68 lakh. Foreign tourism also experienced a notable increase, nearly doubling to 30,474 visitors within the same timeframe.
