Pongtung Residents Blame Poor Road Drainage for Home Flooding

Shillong: Pongtung villagers are fighting back against rising floodwaters. Residents in the East Khasi Hills blame the new Shillong-Dawki road project for their woes. They claim the construction of a nearby culvert lacks basic drainage planning, pushing runoff straight into local houses.

The threat extends beyond property damage. Locals pointed to an uncovered drain at the site that poses a clear risk to students at a nearby school. One child recently fell into the trench but walked away without major harm.

Residents describe a dire situation during storms. "The water flows directly into our homes whenever it rains. During heavy rainfall, the entire area gets inundated," a resident said.

Complaints to the site managers have gone nowhere. Families now want the district administration to step in. They need the drains covered and the flow redirected before the monsoon season hits full force.
