Police Launch Probe After Mass Animal Poisoning in Laban

Shillong: Authorities in Shillong launched an investigation after residents found 11 stray dogs, eight birds, and three cats dead near the Laban Circuit House. The mass death, which began Sunday, appears to be a deliberate act of poisoning. Volunteers buried most of the carcasses, but one surviving animal is undergoing medical checks.

Viveca, founder of the God’s Creatures Foundation, visited the site and warned the public about the lethal food left in the open. "Suppose you let your dog or your cat out, day or night and somebody has placed poisoned food nearby. Your own pet can become a victim," she said. She added that Supreme Court orders strictly prohibit killing stray animals.

Police collected samples of suspected poisoned rice and a bird carcass to send to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that investigators are currently working to identify the culprits and confirm a motive.

Local animal welfare groups, including Save the Voiceless, are pushing for official post-mortems through the Veterinary department. Activists maintain that poisoning is a cruel and dangerous practice that offers no solution to population control. They continue to advocate for vaccination and sterilization programs instead of violence.
