Shillong: Meghalaya police tracked down and arrested 22-year-old Sachin Nishad in Surat on June 23. The arrest follows the April 19 death of a woman from South West Khasi Hills. She had been the target of persistent cyber harassment and blackmail.

The victim's sister filed a formal complaint after the woman faced threats regarding private photos and videos. Nishad allegedly demanded compliance or he would spread the material online. Investigators used digital evidence to pin the suspect to Surat. A team from Mawkyrwat worked with local officers to make the collar. The accused is a native of Uttar Pradesh.

Nishad appeared before a Judicial Magistrate in Surat under a transit remand order. Police charged him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The investigation remains active.

The Superintendent of Police issued a warning to the public following the arrest. The statement urged anyone facing similar abuse to speak up. Authorities reminded the public that "offences such as cyber blackmail, sextortion and threats involving the circulation of private content are punishable under law and assured that strict action would be taken against those involved." Officials want victims to reach out for legal and counseling support before the situation turns fatal.
