Shillong: Meghalaya police tracked down and arrested a 22-year-old man in Gujarat for allegedly driving a local woman to suicide through online blackmail. Sachin Nishad, originally from Uttar Pradesh, faces charges after the South West Khasi Hills district police caught him in Surat on June 23.

The victim died on April 19. Her sister filed a formal complaint shortly after, alleging that constant threats and harassment forced the woman into a desperate corner. The FIR states that Nishad stole private photos and videos of the victim. He used that stolen content as leverage, threatening to dump the media onto social media platforms if she did not follow his orders.

Investigators spent weeks pulling digital evidence and tracing online trails. The trail led them straight to Surat. Officers took Nishad into custody to face interrogation regarding the extent of his cyber activity. Police said the investigation is continuing to determine if others were involved in the extortion ring.

The case underscores the danger of digital extortion. As officials dig deeper into the electronic footprints left behind, they remain focused on the broader threat of cybercrime. "The accused has been taken into custody for further questioning," a police official stated.
