Pig Deaths Spike in Pherzawl District Sparking Outbreak Fears

Imphal: A sudden wave of pig deaths hit Lungthulien village in Pherzawl District. At least 125 pigs are dead. The rapid losses triggered fears of an African Swine Fever outbreak.

The Lungthulien Youth Club reached out to Deputy Commissioner Anunay Anand. They demanded a fast field investigation and financial relief for local farmers. The administration acted quickly. A joint inspection team hit the ground on the morning of July 18.

Dr. George Joute, a specialist in piggery, led the group. He worked alongside Veterinary Officer Dr. Jalianthang. An Animal Extension Officer, a field assistant, and veterinary attendants joined the mission. They visited farms to track symptoms and set up biosecurity plans.

The youth club praised the response. "The Lungthulien Youth Club has expressed its deep appreciation to Deputy Commissioner Anunay Anand, IAS, for his remarkably swift executive action, as well as the Veterinary Department for their immediate ground cooperation and professional support during this critical intervention."

The village is now waiting for final test results. Meanwhile, farmers must follow strict isolation rules to stop the spread. Local owners asked the Manipur State Government to fast track compensation payments. They face massive losses after their livestock were wiped out.
