Kohima: Outrage is mounting across Nagaland following the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire district. The prime suspect in the case is a serving police officer, a detail that has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders and civil society groups alike.
The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) labeled the incident a barbaric and unforgivable assault on womanhood. In a formal statement, the Commission noted that the crime was not only a grave violation of human dignity but also a betrayal of public trust. The body stressed that when those sworn to protect citizens become perpetrators, it undermines the foundation of justice and erodes public confidence.
Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang expressed his concern on social media, describing the officer's involvement as particularly appalling. He noted that the act is unacceptable and must be handled firmly. Rajya Sabha MP S Phangnon Konyak also reacted to the news, stating, "Violence against women, regardless of age, is an affront to humanity and cannot be tolerated."
The Senior Citizens' Association Nagaland (SCAN) urged authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. They called for the elderly survivor to receive all necessary medical and psychological support during the legal process. Meanwhile, the Zeliang Zeme People’s Organization (NZPO) demanded the immediate suspension and dismissal of the accused from service.
As the investigation proceeds, various groups are calling for the strictest penalties under the law. Community leaders have also requested that the public respect the victim’s privacy and avoid actions that might interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
