Outrage erupts in Assam after teenagers face brutal public assault over pigeon theft

Guwahati: A disturbing case of vigilantism has surfaced in the Barpeta district of Assam, where two teenagers were subjected to a public beating and humiliation over allegations of pigeon theft. The incident occurred at a ferry ghat in Saorar Bhitha village near the home of village headman Omar Uddin.

Local reports indicate that the minors, who reside in Balajan Char, were accused of stealing birds from a man named Hamed Ali. Rather than involving local authorities, a group of villagers tied the pair to a pole and physically assaulted them. During the ordeal, the teenagers also had their heads forcibly shaved.

The situation drew significant attention after a video of the assault circulated on social media, drawing widespread condemnation from the community. Witnesses reported that members of a village defence party from Morabhaj were present during the incident, raising concerns about why the suspects were not turned over to the Baghbar police instead of facing mob justice.

Family members eventually rescued the teenagers and brought them home. While residents and activists are now calling for a formal investigation and accountability for those involved in the violence, police officials have yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.
