NNC/FGN Questions Census Accuracy and Criticizes Oil Exploration Projects

Kohima: The NNC/FGN has formally expressed serious concern regarding recent oil exploration and extraction projects, while simultaneously challenging the scope of the upcoming census. In a statement released on June 18, the group argued that confining the census to the current political boundaries of Nagaland provides only a fragment of the total population, creating what it described as a misleading impression and a false narrative about the Naga people.

According to the NNC/FGN, Nagas inhabit diverse regions spanning across Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of Myanmar. The organization maintains that the total population is estimated to be around four million. By ignoring these wider territories, the current census process fails to provide an accurate representation of the Naga nation as a whole.

Beyond concerns over territorial scope, the group urged authorities to ensure total honesty during the enumeration process. It warned against the systemic manipulation of figures, alleging that inflated demographic data has historically been used to secure additional MLA seats and expand vote banks. The organization claimed this behavior, which it traces back to the political culture of the Naga People's Convention, has led to compromised records and negative population growth.

The NNC/FGN further alleged that these distortions have reached local institutions, including Village Development Boards, which allegedly inflate figures to capture increased funding and supplies. They characterized these actions as a betrayal of public trust, insisting that truthful conduct is a moral responsibility.

On the issue of natural resources, the organization declared that oil and other assets are a national inheritance that should not be exploited for personal enrichment or political patronage. They demanded that any resource utilization be guided by accountability and the long-term interests of the public. Additionally, the group addressed the upcoming International Yoga Day, advising that participation must remain voluntary and respectful of the religious and cultural identity of the Naga people.
