Kohima: The Naga National Council/Federal Government of Nagaland has expressed deep anguish over the cycle of ethnic violence that has gripped the Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts since early 2026. Under the leadership of Zhopra Vero, the organization issued a press note denouncing the targeted killings of innocent civilians, village volunteers, and church leaders, alongside the widespread destruction of property.
The group specifically highlighted the May 13 ambush in Kangpokpi district, which resulted in the deaths of Thadou Baptist leaders Rev. Vunthang Sitlou, Rev. Kaigoullun, and Pastor Paogoulen. Additionally, they condemned the abduction and killing of six Naga hostages, identified as Pr. Kenpibou, Rev. Manu, Phenrongwibou, Phenrilungbou, Dilip, and Kaliwangbou. These acts were described as a betrayal of peaceful coexistence and a grave violation of human dignity.
Urging all parties to cease hostilities, the NNC/FGN warned that retaliation only threatens long-term reconciliation efforts in the region. The group called for restraint between Naga and Kuki communities, emphasizing that such violence affects the stability of the entire North East.
While advocating for peace, the organization warned against any distortion of the history regarding Naga ancestral lands. They asserted that any politically motivated attack on a member of the Naga community constitutes an assault on the entire nation and will face a firm response. The NNC/FGN concluded by appealing for a return to sanity and the beginning of a healing process in Southern Nagaland.
