Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the West Jaintia Hills district on June 20 to engage with the artisans of Larnai village. During her trip, she observed the production of Meghalaya’s GI-tagged black clay pottery and took part in the traditional molding process alongside local craftsmen. Sitharaman lauded the community for maintaining this centuries-old tradition, noting that the craft is "not only a reflection of Meghalaya's rich cultural heritage but also an important source of livelihood for local artisans."

The minister emphasized that protecting traditional skills is vital for strengthening rural economies and ensuring that cultural knowledge reaches the next generation. She suggested that the pottery deserves broader market access to provide greater support for these local creators. During her visit, she also toured the Nartiang Monoliths and the Shri Maa Jayantee Temple to learn more about the region's historical and archaeological significance.

Expanding her focus to regional development, the Finance Minister inaugurated the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex, which features a new football stadium. She stated that investing in modern athletic facilities will help nurture young talent and provide better opportunities for youth participation. Sitharaman reaffirmed that the central government remains dedicated to advancing grassroots development while simultaneously promoting tourism and preserving the unique cultural legacy of Meghalaya.
