Imphal: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a forensic probe into the deaths of six Naga civilians whose bodies were discovered following a security operation. The remains were transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) mortuary in Imphal at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.
A specialized team of NIA officers and forensic experts arrived at the facility to conduct scientific assessments and collect evidence. These procedures are intended to establish the specific sequence of events surrounding the deaths of the victims, who were originally abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13.
The arrival of the bodies sparked significant unrest on Wednesday night. Hundreds gathered outside the JNIMS campus, leading to confrontations between members of the crowd and security personnel. Manipur Police eventually dispersed the gathering by firing tear gas shells. Authorities have since reinforced security at the hospital to ensure the investigation proceeds without further disruption.
While investigators continue their work, officials have remained guarded about the progress of the case. A source noted that "investigators are carrying out necessary procedures, including forensic examinations, DNA identification and evidence collection, to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the six civilians."
The discovery of the bodies has triggered widespread outrage across the state. Various community organizations have publicly demanded a transparent investigation and swift accountability for those responsible for the abductions and subsequent killings.
