NIA Gains 45-Day Extension in Dhaka Activist Murder Investigation

Shillong: A special NIA court has granted federal investigators an additional 45 days to probe an international assassination plot. The case centers on the murder of prominent Bangladeshi activist Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who was shot dead in Dhaka in December 2025.

Vacation Judge Saurabh Pratap Singh authorized the extension, bringing the total investigation period to 135 days. The National Investigation Agency requested the extra time after receiving new material from a Supreme Court order and records from the West Bengal Police Special Task Force. These documents require further analysis and custodial interrogation to verify the logistical details of the crime.

The suspects, identified as Rahul, Alamgir Hossain, and Philip Sangma, were remanded to judicial custody for three days by Judge Meenu Kaushik on June 19. While the NIA labels Philip Sangma as a Bangladeshi national, his name has triggered concerns about potential local collusion or identity infiltration along the Meghalaya border.

According to investigators, the hitmen fled into India via the Meghalaya frontier immediately following the assassination, which had sparked widespread rioting in Bangladesh. They were eventually apprehended in Bongaon, West Bengal, as they attempted to return to their home country. The agency is now focusing on how the group navigated the border, noting that the suspects utilized the region to "seek sanctuary in India" after the high profile killing.
