Shillong: Shillong is hosting a four-day orientation for the state’s Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards. The program at the Windermere Hotel runs through July 3. It aims to sharpen the legal and psychosocial skills of new appointees. Retired Justice T Vaiphei and Agatha K Sangma attended the opening sessions to outline the reach of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
Participants are learning how to wield legal powers to protect youth. Chonseng D Arengh, Assistant Director, told the new members they must "engage actively in the sessions to strengthen the state’s child protection mechanism." The training covers the POCSO Act and the Mission Vatsalya Scheme.
Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre signed a deal to track health risks. They plan to combine satellite data with health records. This work will help map disease hotspots and track how climate change hits remote hilly regions. Better data means faster responses.
In other news, Synod College marked its 61st anniversary with book launches and awards. MLA Adelbert Nongrum honored staff with 25 years of service. Separately, the FKJGP in Tura demanded the government fill a vacant Urban Planner post. Locals say the empty desk stalls essential work. Also in the west, a community group demanded that BSNL fix failing mobile service near the Demdema block.
