Guwahati: Assam Minister Biswajit Daimary opened the new Handloom Trade Centre in Dibrugarh on Wednesday. Located at Chowkidinghee near the ASTC Bus Terminal, the building cost Rs 991.70 lakh. The North Eastern Council and the state government footed the bill. The facility aims to give local weavers direct access to buyers and broader markets.
Daimary believes this marks a turning point for the local industry. "The trade centre marks a new chapter for Assam's handloom sector by providing a platform for weavers to promote their products and access wider markets," the minister said. Attendees at the ceremony included ATDC Chairman Rituparna Baruah, BJP President Dulal Bora, and former Sonari MLA Nabanita Handique along with department officials.
State leaders hope to boost cultural tourism by showcasing regional textiles. This project adds to existing government efforts like the Swanirbhar Naari scheme, loom distribution programs, and the Kaziranga Handloom Park. Officials state that the site will support local livelihoods while promoting indigenous craftsmanship to a global audience.
