Kohima: Advisor S. Kiusumew Yimchunger officially opened the new Fire Station South building in Kohima on May 20. The event also marked the launch of a new management system designed to modernize the state's fire and emergency services. Yimchunger noted that the department has evolved significantly, shifting toward the use of advanced equipment and expanded coverage across the state.
The management system, known as NFES-MS, provides access to real-time data and firefighting scenarios. This initiative aims to reduce the loss of life and property during emergencies. As a pilot project, the system currently covers Kohima, Mokokchung, and Dimapur, focusing on digital transformation to improve transparency and efficiency. A new citizen web portal now allows the public to process recruitment, handle payments, apply for Fire NOCs, and report grievances online.
The construction of the new four-storey facility cost Rs. 3.53 crore and was managed by the Police Engineering Project. The building features four-bay garages for emergency vehicles alongside additional logistics space. Inspector General Neilasa Sopfii expressed confidence that the facility will become a standout station in the Northeast region.
During the ceremony, advisors and officials offered suggestions for further growth. W. Chingang Konyak encouraged the expansion of services to village levels and administrative headquarters. Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso recommended deploying smaller firefighting units, such as two-wheelers, and proposed developing rainwater harvesting reservoirs and a dam near the Sanuoru stream to ensure a steady water supply for emergency operations.
