Shillong: Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) completed a breakthrough heart procedure. They performed eastern India's first trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair. The patient was a 27-year-old woman suffering from severe valve leakage and right-sided heart failure. Years earlier, she had open-heart surgery for a congenital defect. A second round of traditional surgery posed life-threatening risks.
A multidisciplinary team led by Prof. Animesh Mishra performed the three-hour procedure. Experts from cardiology, surgery, and anaesthesia departments worked together. Meril Life Sciences provided technical support. Prof. Mishra noted the difficulty of the case. He stated, "For these subsets of patients, conventional surgery carried an extremely high risk. By successfully performing this complex trans-catheter valve repair, we were able to offer a life-saving, minimally invasive treatment that is available only at a few select centres across India."
The patient is now recovering in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit. This marks the ninth procedure of its kind in India. The medical team completed the surgery at less than half the cost usually charged elsewhere. Institute Director Prof. Nalin Mehta praised the team for delivering affordable, high-end care to the region.
