Kohima: Nagaland University has struck a deal to send students to Japan for one-year agricultural internships. The university formalized the partnerships on July 22 during a ceremony at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Medziphema Campus.
The school signed separate Memoranda of Understanding with Kumugai Farm Co., Ltd. in Tokushima Prefecture and Hagumi Farm Co., Ltd. in Kochi Prefecture. University officials, state representatives, and Japanese delegates attended the event.
Students from the Department of Vocational Studies and Skill Development will head to Japan for 12-month placements. These internships count toward university credits. Nagaland University will manage student selection, credit recognition, and performance evaluations. The goal is to provide hands-on experience in modern farming and Japanese work culture.
Pauline Alila, Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences, welcomed the deal. She said, “This collaboration reflects our common aspiration for innovation and knowledge exchange.”
Takeo Kumagai of Kumugai Farm and Yamamoto Seiya of Hagumi Farm represented the Japanese firms. Both directors emphasized that the arrangement should move beyond simple internships. They discussed future research collaborations and technology transfers. Yamamoto highlighted Japan’s focus on precision and sustainability. He noted that the partnership was not about one side teaching the other, but about learning together.
Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Medziphema Campus, closed the event. He pushed for the program to eventually include joint research. He also asked the Japanese partners to consider online modules. These would give students early access to Japanese agricultural technology. The Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland played a key role in facilitating the agreements.
