Nagaland Reschedules International Yoga Day in Schools Following Public Backlash

Kohima: The government of Nagaland has officially postponed the International Day of Yoga observance in schools across the state. Originally scheduled for June 21, the event will now take place on Monday, June 22. This shift comes after the School Education Department received approval from the Chief Secretary to adjust the calendar.

The decision follows vocal opposition from various organizations, including church bodies, student unions, and members of the public. Critics argued against holding the mandatory event on a Sunday, which is a day reserved for worship and religious activities by the state's Christian population. According to an official communication issued on June 18, the rescheduling was made specifically "in view of June 21 falling on a Sunday."

Just two days prior, the Directorate of School Education had ordered all government and private schools to participate in the 12th International Day of Yoga. The initial directive required officials to organize yoga sessions and submit proof of participation, such as GPS-tagged photographs, to the Ministry. With the new order in place, the Directorate is now tasked with notifying all educational institutions of the updated timeline to ensure compliance on the following Monday.
