Kohima: Multiple civil society organizations in Nagaland have issued strong condemnations following the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire on June 17, 2026. The accused, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung, is a police personnel posted at Kiphire District Executive Force.
The Nagaland State Commission for Women joined other groups, including the Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong and the Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation, in calling for swift legal consequences. Commission chairperson W. Nginyeih Konyak described the incident as a profound betrayal of the public trust, stating, "The act has disturbed society and has shaken public trust in the system."
The Senior Citizens Association Nagaland emphasized the need for a thorough and impartial investigation, urging authorities to prioritize the survivor's medical and psychological support. The organization also stressed that any act threatening the safety and dignity of older persons warrants the utmost attention from the state.
The Zeliang Students Union Nagaland and the Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation demanded the immediate suspension and dismissal of the accused from service. While acknowledging the shock felt by the Zeliang community due to the accused's background, the student union maintained that such actions are individual in nature and do not reflect the values of their people. All involved organizations expressed solidarity with the survivor and her family while calling for the harshest legal punishment allowed.
