Kohima: Nagaland celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, with a series of community-led initiatives focused on climate action. Schools, government offices, and civil society groups joined forces under the theme, Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future, to host tree plantation drives and environmental awareness programs across the state.
In Dimapur, the organization Dimapur 24/7 distributed 111 saplings to local schools and traffic police to honor their service. Chairperson Annie Jain led the efforts, which included stops at The Maple Tree School and Eden Higher Secondary School. Elsewhere in the city, the NPF Central Minority Wing combined a plantation drive with a cleanliness campaign. President Bishnu Bhattacharjee noted that environmental conservation is a matter of collective social responsibility.
Institutional efforts remained prominent throughout the day. At the ANMA Integrated Development Association, staff members each planted a fruit tree. Dr. Anna Lungbila Bibiana, the organization’s HR Manager and Director of Trainings and Programmes, addressed the group to advocate for unified environmental efforts. She stated, "The importance of collective action in addressing climate change" is vital for the region's future.
Legal professionals also participated, as the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and the High Court Bar Association planted various fruit trees at the New High Court Complex in Meriema. Member Secretary Neiko Akami urged the attendees to look beyond the initial planting stage, emphasizing the need to nurture and protect the trees. Meanwhile, Nagaland University held events across its Lumami, Kohima, and Medziphema campuses, featuring messages from leadership on the necessity of long-term environmental stewardship.
