Nagaland Legal Authorities Promote Support Scheme for Wildlife Conflict Victims

Kohima: The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) joined forces with the Phek District Legal Services Authority to host a legal awareness event at Christian Mission Higher Secondary School on June 18. The program focused on the NALSA Scheme on Access to Justice for Victims of Human-Wildlife Conflict, 2025.

NSLSA Member Secretary Neiko Akami explained that the initiative aims to tackle the social and economic burdens faced by those living in forest-fringe and tribal regions. He noted that the scheme supports individuals affected by animal attacks or property damage by providing legal aid and coordinating relief efforts with the Forest Department. Akami stated, "The scheme provides for committees at both the State and district levels under the legal services authorities, which are mandated to coordinate with the Forest Department in addressing human-wildlife conflict cases."

District Legal Services Authorities will oversee reporting and assistance for affected residents. Victims are eligible for timely intervention and compensation based on their specific losses. Officials cited recent examples from Wokha district, where relief payments were successfully issued to residents impacted by wild elephant attacks.

The event also featured sessions on child safety and environmental law. Retainer Lawyer Sekhotso Rokha detailed the protections under the POCSO Act, 2012, while emphasizing the importance of reporting sexual offenses. Additionally, Panel Lawyer Thukutalu Chizo discussed the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and its 2022 amendments. She urged the audience of over 150 students to maintain empathy toward wildlife while fulfilling their constitutional duty to preserve the natural environment.
