Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met with Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi on June 10 to discuss reviving oil exploration and production in the state. Rio attended the meeting alongside Deputy Chief Ministers TR Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton to explore key development initiatives.
The meeting addresses long-standing challenges that have stalled oil activities in Nagaland for years, including operational hurdles, security concerns, and issues involving local landowners. Both state leaders expressed optimism following the dialogue, with Rio describing the session as a series of constructive discussions.
Union Minister Puri highlighted the strategic importance of the region, noting that the government aims to turn the Northeast into a vital component of India's energy landscape. He emphasized that utilizing the region's hydrocarbon resources is a priority for the central government.
Reflecting on the government's broader economic goals, Puri stated, "By unlocking its vast hydrocarbon potential, we are creating new opportunities for growth, investment and prosperity while strengthening the nation's energy security under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi." Patton echoed this sentiment by thanking the Minister for his guidance and ongoing commitment to the development of Nagaland.
