Kohima: The Department of Youth Resources and Sports in Nagaland has introduced two major initiatives to support athletes at the Indira Gandhi Stadium Academy in Kohima. These programs focus on holistic mentorship and vocational skill development to ensure students are prepared for life after their competitive careers.
Anthony Ngullie, Secretary of Youth Resources and Sports, officially launched the initiatives on June 9. He emphasized the necessity of providing athletes with practical skills to combat rising unemployment in the state. During the launch, Ngullie noted, "We have been discussing about this mentorship as well as the skill development of our athletes who are staying in our hostel at present and for those who have stayed and left the academy."
The mentorship program pairs 11 department officers with small groups of 12 to 13 athletes. These mentors will provide guidance on academic progress, mental health, discipline, and career planning through March 2027. According to Youth Resources and Sports officer Naroenla, the goal is to create a supportive environment where athletes receive individual attention beyond their regular coaching sessions.
The skill-based economic sustenance program begins on June 11 and runs through October. It targets athletes over the age of 15, offering training in mobile repair, crochet, food processing, baking, and floristry. Each module includes two weeks of professional instruction followed by two weeks of self-practice. Participants will also receive training in business management, financial literacy, and marketing to help them turn these vocational skills into sustainable income sources.
Director Kethosituo Sekhose stated that the department plans to implement 31 distinct programs across the state by 2026. These efforts are designed to foster self-reliance and provide athletes with a comprehensive support system for their future endeavors.
