Kohima: Nine community representatives from the Satoi Range in Nagaland have gathered at the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in Mariani, Assam, for an intensive six-day conservation workshop. The training program, which launched on June 17, focuses on protecting the Hoolock Gibbon, a primate species currently listed as endangered.
Aaranyak, a conservation group active across Northeast India, is hosting the event. The organization aims to foster local expertise and field skills regarding habitat management and primate protection. Divisional Forest Officer of Zunheboto, Obed Bohovi Swu, officially opened the session. He noted that the participants were selected under the Satoi Connect Initiative to bolster local awareness of the unique wildlife residing in the Satoi Range forests.
Swu highlighted the necessity of local involvement in safeguarding regional biodiversity. "The initiative aims to strengthen community participation in wildlife conservation by equipping local representatives with practical knowledge and conservation skills," he stated during the inaugural event.
The curriculum is led by Dr. Dilip Chetry, a prominent primatologist and head of the Primate Research and Conservation Division at Aaranyak. Throughout the week, the representatives will receive hands-on experience in effective community-based conservation practices, providing them with the necessary tools to monitor and protect the species upon their return to Nagaland.
