Kohima: The Postal Directorate in New Delhi officially approved 19 indigenous languages for Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment in Nagaland. This policy change ends the old all-India open recruitment model. It prioritizes local applicants. The government move follows a notification dated July 27, 2026, which recognizes the state's linguistic diversity.
Applicants must show proficiency in one of the 19 recognized languages: Angami, Ao, Chang, Chakhesang, Konyak, Khiamniungan, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sumi, Sangtam, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, Zeliang, Garo, Mikir, Kuki, or Kachari. District Deputy Commissioners will serve as the official certifying authorities for these language skills. The Department of Posts will manage recruitment every six months.
This shift stems from pressure applied by MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso. On March 4, 2025, he addressed the 14th Nagaland Assembly about the lack of postal jobs for local youths. "The policy has come into effect" as of August 2026. An Office Memorandum formalized the rules on May 21, 2026.
The August 20, 2026 announcement of the GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II confirms new roles for Branch Postmasters, Assistant Branch Postmasters, and Dak Sevaks. Authorities aim to ensure local candidates navigate the application process without obstacles.
